Day 3

 

Route for the day: Cusco – Ayacucho. Familiarisation with vehicles. This is followed by a drive through the central highlands of Peru, an area that is relatively unknown to foriegn tourists, and yet includes one of the most attractive towns in the Peruvian Andes. The city of Ayacucho is still redolent with the atmosphere of the colonial era. Evening meal together and hotel accommodation.

Day 4

 

Ayacucho – Paracas. Journey through the highlands of the Peruvian Andes, in the shadow of peaks rising to more than 5,000 metres, and then descending to the Peruvian coast and the Paracas Peninsula. Drive through the great Paracas desert nature reserve, home to pelicans and sea lion colonies. Camping overnight in the national park.

Day 5

 

Paracas – Nazca?. Drive South along the famous Panamericana. Short detour to the desert oasis Huacachina, nestled among enormous sand dunes. After lunch, the journey continues on the Panamericana to the San José Pampas, which is known worldwide as the site of the mysterious symbols in the ground – the Nazca Lines. Overnight stay in a hostel in Nazca.
